Nature of Position

NC REALTORS® maintains a diverse and comprehensive array of programs and services serving a REALTOR® community of over 54,000 members. The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for leading and strategically supporting initiatives aimed at assuring the association’s long-term growth, sustainability, and member value. The Chief Operating Officer will provide operational oversight to effectively and efficiently achieve association goals, enhance organizational capacity, and ensure strong alignment with the association’s strategic vision.

Working side by side with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the COO will communicate and build commitment to the association’s mission, vision, and goals among staff, volunteers, and members while fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and inclusivity.

Essential Responsibilities

Operations & Risk Management

Collaborate with CEO, CLO, CFO and key staff/volunteers in planning, developing, and evaluating the association’s goals, programs, policies, and procedures.

Provide operational leadership to ensure smooth and efficient processes across all departments.

Execute agreements, contracts, documents, and certifications as authorized by the CEO.

Collaborate with the CEO and CLO on insurance, risk mitigation strategies, and enterprise compliance to protect the association’s assets, reputation, and legal standing.

Supervise and approve the purchase of office equipment, furniture, and technology necessary to support staff productivity and member services.

Oversee all administrative systems (including IT infrastructure, data management, and cybersecurity) to ensure reliability, scalability, and innovation.

Lead business continuity and crisis management planning to ensure operational resilience.

Ensure organizational policies align with governance requirements, nonprofit regulations, and state/federal compliance obligations.

Strategic Leadership

Partner with the CEO to set goals, direction, and policies for the association, maintaining consistent communication with staff and members.

Lead the development of performance metrics (KPIs) to monitor organizational progress toward strategic and operational goals, reporting regularly to the CEO and board.

Promote innovation, continuous improvement, and data-informed decision-making across the organization.

Facilitate integration across staff teams to improve responsiveness, decision-making, and execution of the Strategic Plan.

Enhance member engagement by ensuring that association programs, products, and services deliver measurable value.

Build and sustain external partnerships with state and local associations, business organizations, government entities, and community partners to advance association objectives.

Human Resources & Talent Development

In coordination with department leaders, direct human resource functions including recruiting, training, performance management, succession planning, and staff culture initiatives.

Support compensation and benefits planning with the CEO and CFO.

Champion diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts across staffing, leadership development, and organizational culture.

Provide coaching, mentorship, and leadership development opportunities to staff at all levels.

Leadership Development & Governance

Conduct board and leadership training, including governance best practices and strategic planning for local associations and related entities.

Collaborate with the CEO to support effective board governance, ensuring alignment between volunteer leadership and staff execution.

Constituency & Member Engagement

Oversee programs and services for key constituencies including Local Association Executives, Commercial, Appraisal, Property Management, and NCVRMA.

Ensure programs are inclusive, innovative, and integrated into overall association strategy.

Represent the association at events, conferences, and public speaking engagements to strengthen relationships with members and stakeholders.

Respond to REALTOR® member inquiries with professionalism and focus on service excellence.

Travel & National Engagement

In-state and long-distance travel required.

Attendance at NAR Mid-Year and Annual Meetings required.

Participation in NAR committees and work groups encouraged.

Background Requirements

Education

Bachelor’s degree required.

Advanced degree in law, management, public administration, or related field preferred.

Professional Skills

Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking and consensus-building abilities.

Strong strategic thinking and analytical skills to drive decision-making.

Demonstrated ability to lead organizational change, foster innovation, and promote a collaborative and inclusive culture.

Proven capacity to manage risk, compliance, and governance issues in a complex organization.

Relevant Experience

Minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible leadership experience required.

Extensive experience in association or nonprofit management strongly preferred.

Demonstrated success in staff leadership, operations management, and strategic planning.

Position Relationships

NC REALTORS® Board of Directors & Executive Committee: Supports and attends meetings, ensuring alignment of operations with governance direction.

CEO: Reports directly and serves as a key strategic partner.

CLO:  Collaborates on compliance, risk management and governance matters.

CFO & Senior Leadership Team: Collaborates on financial, operational, and strategic initiatives.

Staff & Volunteers: Provides leadership, coaching, and support across all organizational initiatives.

Compensation

Base Salary of $190,000 - $210,000.  NC REALTORS® additionally offers a robust benefits package, including health insurance and a variety of other benefits.  Relocation assistance is available, as the applicant must reside close enough to be on site/in person at the NC REALTORS® office in Greensboro, NC to carry out the duties of the organization.
